The district headquarter is located in Indian Union Territory of Ladakh. Formerly it was named as Purig, located in the center of Suru Valley. The name Kargil has been derived from the combination of two words Khar, meaning castle, and rKill means centre. Popular tourists attractions include Mulbekh Monastery, Drass war memorial, Suru Basin and Lamayuru Monastery.
