Hampi or Pampa or Kshetra or Kishkindha. The name was derived from the old name of the Tungabhadra River which was Pampa, so the name Hampi is the adapted version of the Kannada name Hampe. The city is bounded by the Tungabhadra River on one side and Anjaneya, Malyavanta and Matanga Hills by the three sides. According to Ramayana, it is believed by Hindus that Hampi was a kingdom of Monkeys before Vijayanagara Empire when the city was known as Kishkindha.
