City was built by Diwan of the Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagar who derived the name of the city from his wife's name Ananda while some believed that name was derived from 'Ananthasagaram', which means an 'Endless Ocean' The city was ruled by various empires but the Vijayanagar empire had a great impact on it.
